Dunluce Castle is a medieval cliff-top ruin that served as the inspiration for Castle Pyke of House Greyjoy in Game of Thrones. Keep in mind that like most things filmed on Game of Thrones, the castle was digitally enhanced.
You don't have to have seen the show to enjoy walking through what remains of Dunluce Castle. I like a ruined castle just as much as an intact one. This one doesn't disappoint with it's majestic surroundings it's very photogenic.
It's not hard to believe all the lore surrounding Dunluce Castle. Siting just below the castle is an enormous cave known as Mermaid's Cave, of course.
Then there's the banshee believed to be Maeve Roe, the only daughter of Lord MacQuillan. She wanted to marry a man other than the one her father had arranged.
When she refused, Lord MacQuillan locked her in one of the castle’s turrets, now known as Roe Tower. One stormy night, Maeve’s true love attempted to rescue her. The pair made it down to the cave and left by row boat, only to be bashed up against the cliffs.
On stormy nights, locals have reported hearing screams coming from the turret that Maeve was held in.
There are many tours to choose from that run along the Causeway Coast. The whole reason I chose Paddywagon over The Game of Thrones Tour Iron Islands is because Paddywagon stopped at Dunluce Castle for more than a photo stop outside, I wanted to be able to walk through the castle. Also, the Paddywagon tour was shorter.
The Game of Thrones Tour has more stops. I would do that one next time if I'm lucky enough to go back because their tour guides are more fun. They are extras from the show and very enthusiastic.
